Riviera del Corallo and Grotta di Nettuno

The Riviera del Corallo, west of Alghero, is named after the coral reefs at the foot of the limestone cliffs. The finest beaches, Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto, lie beyond Fertilia, the soulless town created by the Fascists in 1936 as part of a large land-reclamation programme. The bay of Porto Conte, where some of Alghero’s smartest hotels hide among the pines, is a large natural harbour fringed with sandy bays. The panoramic coast road takes you south to Capo Caccia, the imposing limestone promontory formerly used for game shooting and today a haunt of the herring gull and (more rarely) the peregrine falcon. Just before the tip of the promontory a road leads to the Escala del Cabirol, a dramatic stairway of 656 steps descending 110m (360ft) to the entrance of the Grotta di Nettuno ‡ [map] (Neptune’s Grotto; daily Apr–Oct 9am–7pm, Nov–Mar 10am–3pm; guided tours), the most spectacular of Sardinia’s caves. Since the first mention of this fairy-tale cavern in the 18th century, writers and travellers have extolled its virtues. One of them, English barrister, John Tyndale, likened it to the Alhambra. In the 19th century, sailors used to illuminate the cave with hundreds of candles and at one time it was the setting for candlelit concerts (today it’s lit by electricity).
